Study seeks smog link to brain cancer

A study of the possible links between smog and brain cancer was launched Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center received a $559,250 grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District for the project, which will be led by renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Keith Black.

Black told a news conference that brain cancer is becoming a leading cause of cancer deaths among young people, and researchers are starting to suspect that "ultrafine particles" may play a role. Ultrafine particles generally come from diesel exhaust and are plentiful along highways.

The project will revolve around the study of changes in the brain tissue of lab rats exposed to various pollutants found in smog. The pathological changes will be compared to those in human brain tumors to see if air pollution effects tissue associated with the formation of brain cancer.
